"Un pequeño paso para el hombre y un gran paso para la humanidad"

Podría decirse que es una de las declaraciones mas famosas de la historia moderna. Casi todo el mundo sabe a que evento se refiere la frase y dónde fue dicho por primera vez. Es una frase poderosa pero no obstante lo que lo hace aun mas memorable es el evento. Nadie recordaría las palabras si Neil Armstrong las hubiera declarado en su habitación. El evento es lo que es importante, las palabras son simplemente el informe.

Lesslie Newbigin (‘The Gospel in a Pluralist Society') señala que es muy parecido en las Evangelios y en el libro de Hechos. Dieron casi todas las predicaciones después de que ocurriera algo; ‘curando a un paralítico, multiplicando alimentos para dar comer a una multitud, dando la vista a un ciego y levantando a un hombre de la muerte.' Estos fueron acontecimientos que demostraron la presencia de un reino nuevo, de una etapa nueva después de estos acontecimientos dieron un informe. Lesslie Newbigin es un escritor muy inteligente que tiene un talento especial para las palabras, pero confesó que en los Evangelios, ‘las palabras carecerían de sentido sin las curaciones.' ¡Que veamos obras poderosas así!

Hace poco celebramos un evento al que pudimos invitar a amigos nuestros no creyentes. A pesar de que coincidió con ‘el clásico' (el Madrid contra el Barca) vinieron varios invitados, la mayoría de los cuales eran españoles. Lo pasamos muy bien, comunicamos muy claramente el Evangelio y la gente se acerco mas a Jesús. También pudimos ver al Madrid que ganó al Barca y prácticamente se hicieron campeones de la Liga. ¡Qué buena noche!

Sin embargo, lo que anhelamos y lo que hace falta en España y Portugal son ‘obras poderosas'. Nos gustaría que oraseis por estos dos países. Dad gracias a Dios por el evento reciente - el primero de muchos. Dad gracias a Dios por los invitados que asistieron (y por la victoria de Madrid) pero nos gustaría que suplicarais a Dios por su poder y la realidad de la presencia de su reino para sanar, restaurar, liberar y renovar.

One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind

"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Arguably one of the most famous statements in modern history. Virtually everyone knows to what event it refers and where it was first spoken. It is a great, pithy strap line but, nonetheless, what makes it so memorable is still the event. The words would not be so well known if Neil Armstrong had declared them in his bedroom! The event is what matters, the words are the report.

Lesslie Newbigin (The Gospel in a Pluralist Society) notes that it is similar throughout the gospels and the book of Acts. Almost every sermon comes in response to an event; ‘the healing of a paralytic, the feeding of a multitude, the giving of sight to a blind man, and the raising of a man from the dead.' Those were events that demonstrated the breaking in of the new kingdom about which they brought a report. Lesslie Newbigin is a clever apologist whose craft is with words but admits that in the gospels ‘the preaching is meaningless without the healings'. Oh for those mighty works!

Recently we held our first proper outreach event. Despite the fact that it clashed with the Barcelona-Real Madrid match we had a handful of guests, most of whom were Spanish. We had good fun, the gospel was clearly communicated and people were moved closer to Jesus. We were also able to watch Madrid beat Barca 2-1 and virtually secure the title. A good evening!

We're encouraged and yet what we long for and what is truly required in Spain and Portugal are ‘mighty works'. We would love you to pray for this in these two countries. Thank God for our first outreach event - the first of many. Thank God for guests (and for the Madrid win!) yet we would love for you to implore God for His power and for the reality of His kingdom to heal and restore, to set free and make new.

What Madness!

"Qué locura !" (What madness!). While none of our friends have actually gone as far as saying this to us, from time to time you get the impression it is in the forefront of their minds. The truth is, who can blame them? It must seem like madness to attempt to ‘plant a church', particularly, in southern Europe. I know of Christians that think the same. What gives us confidence that this might succeed?

More than one thing should be said to properly address the question, however, one answer is surely found in Ephesians 4. It says, ‘And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry and the building up of the body of Christ...' (Eph 4v11&12).

If the Bible is true (and I'm pretty sure it is!) then these verses tell me that Jesus hasn't left the planting and growth of healthy churches up to chance. Instead he has purposefully provided people with the required gifts that both ‘equip' and ‘build up' His church. Our task is to find, recognise and relate to those appropriately gifted and called. Through receiving them and their ministry the church grows in a healthy manner.

Recently we had the privilege of hosting Guy & Heather Miller in Madrid. It was great fun but also a great privilege as Guy's apostolic ministry stretches over churches in the south of the UK, India and the Iberian Peninsula. Guy spent time teaching on key foundations that are to go into a healthy church. In such a short time he managed to cover in remarkable depth key issues such as; leadership, the Bible, the church, servanthood, evangelism, training, discipleship, the centrality of the gospel and more... We had a great time together, the final session being ‘the icing on the cake' as Guy and Heather prophesied over each one of the team with significant accuracy.

In a few days time, we are jumping on planes or into cars to travel across the border to Portugal. There we will gather with other Newfrontiers' churches and planters from around the Iberian Peninsula. We're doing it because once again we get the opportunity to receive from gifts given by the ascended Christ as Mike & Jess Shore (Penafiel) host our second Iberian Peninsula Conference (www.afonte.com.pt)

It will include stacks of opportunity to build friendships, talk, discuss, pray and prophesy for one another. We will also be receiving from gifted men such as Guy Miller & John Groves from the UK, Oscar Suarez from Mexico and Mike Shore from Portugal.

We would deeply value your prayers for our time together. Please also pray for the churches/cities represented by people from Valencia, Almeria, Madrid, Gibraltar, Lagos, Oporto and Penafiel, that God's blessing would overflow.

¡Que Locura!

"¡Que locura!" Ninguno de nuestros amigos nos lo ha dicho directamente a nosotros, sin embargo a veces nos parece que lo están pensando. En realidad, ¿quién podría culparlos? Les debe parecer a ellos como locura el intentar plantar una iglesia, en especial en el sur de Europa. Yo sé que algunos cristianos piensan lo mismo. ¿Qué nos da tanta confianza para creer que va a ser un éxito?

Hay muchas maneras de abordar esta pregunta adecuadamente, sin embargo una respuesta seguramente puede ser encontrada en Efesios 4. Dice, ‘Y él mismo constituyó a unos, apóstoles; a otros, profetas; a otros, evangelistas; a otros, pastores y maestros, a fin de perfeccionar a los santos para la obra del ministerio, para la edificación del cuerpo de Cristo...' (Efesios 4v11y12).

Si la Biblia es verdad (y estoy bastante seguro que lo es!) estos versículos me dicen que Jesús no ha dejado la plantación y el crecimiento de las iglesias sanas al azar. En cambio Él ha proporcionado a propósito personas que tienen los dones necesarios que ‘perfeccionan' y ‘edifican' Su iglesia. Nuestra tarea es encontrar, reconocer y relacionarnos con aquellos que están dotados y llamados apropiadamente. Al recibirlos a ellos y su ministerio la iglesia crece en una manera sana.

Hace unas semanas Guy y Heather Miller pasaron unos días con nosotros en Madrid. Lo pasamos muy bien y nos divertimos mucho y fue un gran privilegio recibir el ministerio apostólico de Guy que sirve a iglesias en el sur de Inglaterra, la India y la Península Ibérica. Guy enseñó sobre fundamentos claves que deberían quedarse en una iglesia sana. En un tiempo corto logró tratar asuntos claves como; liderazgo, la biblia, la iglesia, la importancia del servicio, evangelismo, entrenamiento, discipulado, la centralidad del evangleio y mucho más... Lo pasamos muy bien y la última sesión fue lo mejor cuando Guy y Heather profetizaron sobre cada uno del equipo con una precisión significativa.

Dentro de unos días vamos a subir a aviones y coches para viajar a través de la frontera a Portugal. Allí nos reuniremos con otras iglesias y plantadores de Newfrontiers que habrán acudido de alrededor de la Península Ibérica. Tendremos la oportunidad de nuevo de recibir de personas dotados come Guy Miller y John Groves del Reino Unido, Oscar Suarez de Mexico y Mike Shore de Portugal.

Profundamente valoraríamos vuestras oraciones por este rato juntos. Por favor ora por las iglesias/ciudades que van a estar representados ahí por personas de Valencia, Almeria, Madrid, Gibraltar, Lagos, Oporto y Penafiel y que las bendiciones del Señor se desborden.

Plegaria y progreso

Uno de los retos de plantar una iglesia en un lugar como España es simplemente encontrar la terminología correcta para explicar por qué estamos aquí. Por ejemplo, normalmente no utilizan el verbo ‘plantar' con respecto a una iglesia. Tienen la tendencia usar palabras como ‘empezar', ‘formar' o ‘construir'. Sin embargo, como he reflexionado sobre esto, me he convencido de que ‘plantar una iglesia' es una frase más apropiada porque plantar una iglesia es más orgánico que construir una. Alguien que haya intentado hacer esto sabe que no es simplemente un proceso de poner juntos los materiales adecuados. Por cierto, es más como el misterio que ocurre cuando una semilla es sembrada en la tierra y la vida independiente que surge después.

Sin embargo, no es totalmente un misterio porque sabemos en qué necesitamos poner nuestras energías para que sea exitosa: p. ej. plantar y regar. Una cosa es segura si no sembramos no cosecharemos. Por lo tanto, nosotros al principio de éste año, estamos enfocando en las cosas que se requieren. Principalmente, esto es sembrar:

• Sembrar en Dios: Alguna vez C. H. Spurgeon dijo, ‘Oración es el nervio delgado que mueve los músculos de la omnipotencia.' Por eso éste año es un año de plegaria y con gran anticipación nos fijamos en nuestra parte delgado para que veamos su parte poderosa. Os agradezco por cada oración que se ha hecho para que plantemos una iglesia sana y vibrante en Madrid y queremos recurrir a que sigáis con esos esfuerzos y ya podemos ver las señales de las primicias por cada plegaria. 
• Sembrar en el equipo: Uno de los ejemplos de las primicias ha sido la llegada de los primeros miembros de nuestro equipo. Actualmente, los ratos con el equipo incluyen alrededor de 7 u 8 adultos que se reúne semanalmente (incluyendo los primeros invitados españoles). Otros miembros del equipo aun están intentando vender casas y obtener trabajo (un caballo de batalla). Acabamos de enterarnos ésta semana de que otra familia de Inglaterra se va a unir a nosotros en ésta aventura. No parece mucho pero Jesucristo revolucionó el mundo con 12 discípulos y por eso estamos invirtiendo tiempo en preparar a los miembros de nuestro equipo para que crezca. Tenemos el propósito de ser doblar el número éste año que nos dejará en una posición fuerte para poner en marcha una reunión pública en 2013. Por favor ora para que Dios siga aumentando el número de miembros del equipo - en particular oramos por músicos, un líder clave de adoración, estudiantes, evangelistas y alguien más que ame Dios y ame a su iglesia.
• Sembrar en la cultura: Al final si vamos a producir fruta de España tendremos que sembrar en la tierra de España. Por lo tanto es imprescindible que pasemos literalmente centenares de horas en clases aprendiendo la lengua, memorizando vocabulario, practicando conversaciones y pasando tiempo con amigos aprendiendo sobre sus vidas. Por cierto, no es como una obra de construcción de hecho es más como sembrar mientras nos preguntamos dónde dará Dios el crecimiento. De nuevo las primeras señales de vida nueva están surgiendo. Hemos experimentado crecimiento gradual con el idioma y espero empezar a predicar en español pronto. También tenemos los primeros no-creyentes que muestran interés (2 de estos son españoles) y hemos empezado a orar para que veamos su salvación éste año. En realidad este es un año de preparación y no esperábamos llegar a ésta situación en ésta temporada por eso es una fuente de ánimo.

Prayer & Progress

One challenge in planting a church in a place like Spain is even finding the right terminology to explain why we are here. The verb ‘to plant' (plantar) for example is not one that is often used with regards to a church. The tendency is to use words like ‘starting', ‘forming', ‘building' but the more I've reflected on this the more convinced I am that ‘to plant' a church is more appropriate. Church planting is far more organic than simply building one. Anyone who has attempted to do this will know it is not simply the process of putting the right materials together but is far more like the mystery that happens when a seed is planted and independent life emerges.

It isn't totally a mystery though it does signify where we need to put our energies if we're to be successful; ie planting and watering. One thing is sure if we don't sow, we won't reap. So for us at the beginning of this year, we're focussed on doing the things that are required. And that principally means sowing:

• Sowing into God: Spurgeon once said, ‘Prayer is the slender nerve that moves the muscles of omnipotence.' So this is to be a year of prayer for us and with great anticipation we focus on our slender part that we will see his powerful part. We're really grateful for everyone who has been and is praying for us to plant a vibrant, healthy church in Madrid and want to appeal to you to continue those efforts and already we can see the signs of early first fruits through prayer.
• Sow into our Team: One example of first fruits has been the arrival of our first team members. Currently our team times include around 7/8 adults meeting weekly (including our first Spanish visitors). Other team members are still trying to sell houses and secure jobs (a constant source of spiritual warfare!). We have also heard this week of another family that are going to join us on this adventure. It may not sound like much, but Jesus turned the world on its head by starting with 12 men and so we're investing time in developing our team members and growing the team. We aim to at least double our number this year which will leave us in a strong position to launch something publically in 2013. Please do pray for God to keep adding to us - in particular we're praying for musicians, a key worship leader, students, evangelists and anyone else who loves God and his church!
• Sow into Culture: Ultimately if we're to bear Spanish fruit, we're to be planted fully into Spanish soil. That essentially means a lot of effort has been and is being spent on language and culture learning and on developing genuine friendships. To sow in this way means literally hundreds of hours in classes, conversational practice, memorising vocab lists and spending time with friends and learning about their lives. It's certainly not like a construction job and far more like sowing while we wonder where God will bring the growth. However, once again, the first signs of life are emerging. We have made steady progress with the language and I hope to be preaching in Spanish soon. We also have the first non-Christians showing genuine signs of interest (2 of whom are Spanish) and we are now starting to pray that we might see salvation this year. In truth, this year is a year of preparation and we were not expecting to be at this place, at this point in time so it is a source of real encouragement.
